Vico Pancellorum is a village rich in history, crowned by its beautiful 9th–11th century church and with roots that stretch all the way back to Roman times. The remains of the ancient Roman settlement still sit just above today’s medieval village. Remarkably, road access only arrived in the 1960s, leaving the community largely self-sufficient for centuries.
Surrounded by the wooded slopes of the Apennines, Vico lies just north of Lucca and close to the famous thermal town of Bagni di Lucca—once frequented by Byron, Shelley, the Barrett-Brownings, Heinrich Heine, and other literary greats.
From here, day trips are wonderfully easy: explore Pisa, Florence, Bologna, or the enchanting walled city of Lucca with its designer boutiques, lively monthly antique market, elegant piazzas, and countless cafés, bars, and restaurants to tempt every appetite. The coastline of Viareggio, the charm of Barga, and the dramatic beauty of Cinque Terre are also within reach.
Bagni di Lucca offers all essential shopping as well as a lovely swimming pool complex, while marked walking trails from the village lead to Balzo Nero, Croce di Castello, and other scenic spots. And for ski enthusiasts, the Abetone Ski Resort is just 40 minutes away, offering an extensive range of runs across three mountain areas.
